99% of people who threaten suicide do so because they want attention. By giving them attention, you’re feeding their negative behaviors.
If they really wanted to kill themselves, they’d know to be more subtle about it. Depressed people aren’t known as being the best at expressing their feelings.
communismkills, I love most of your posts but this is really untrue. It is partially true in that depressed people aren’t best at expressing their feelings, but asking suicidal people to be subtle is really dangerous- Suicide shouldn’t be taboo to talk about because many people who talk about suicide are thinking about it. I know this from personal experience, having past depression, a recent diagnosis of rapid cycling bipolar, and having been in and receiving a lot of information from a mental hospital.
In these experiences I have struggled and have met many people who struggled with suicidal thoughts.
Suicide is hard to talk about, especially when you know that people will think you’re just trying to get attention. It’s hard to get help and many people who should don’t for this very reason.
Saying things like ‘if they really wanted to kill themselves’ is pointless. No one really wants to kill themselves- it’s a painful struggle with a very real illness- an illness of the brain.
And I have known the people who joke about suicide and do it for attention, which is a terrible thing, but I have known that, personally, to be a rare case.
99% is a spitball number, communismkills
